Tom Howlett, Sales Director at WAS UK contacted Fleet ID with a large contract for the NHS. Our Business Development Manager, Kylie Mitchell, worked through the details of the contract with Tom…

The Scope of the WAS Contract

  • 140 vehicles in total for NHS Trusts throughout the UK – a mixture of mass casualty, personnel, welfare and logistics vehicles to be delivered to NHS Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) sector
  • External reflective and fluorescent safety markings to meet the HOSDB standard as required by the NHS
  • Internal decals
  • Printed and CAD Cut vinyl elements to the livery, such as service crests
  • A time-saving solution to shutter door reflective text application
  • Mixed vehicle makes and models to be included – MAN box body, MAN TGE, DAF LF 230 FA and Toyota Pick Ups
  • Delivery of mixed vehicle livery kits to two major WAS sites – WAS Germany and WAS UK

HOSDB standards for NHS vehicles

WAS needed the vehicle livery to meet HOSDB standard. HOSDB standard (The Home Office Scientific Development Branch) mandates the use of high-conspicuity microprismatic retroreflective materials.

As a regular supplier into NHS Trusts, the required HOSDB standard materials were readily available to us and Kylie recommended the materials that would meet this specification.

Problem Solving with Fleet ID’s Templating Service

On previous fitting for Incident Response Units, WAS had to apply text to the roller shutters on the vehicle sides and then trim the material to fit snugly on each shutter slat.

The Fleet ID templating service meant that WAS could put this slightly cumbersome and time-consuming process behind them.

After in-depth templating took place, Fleet ID supplied a totally unique and unprecedented system. The shutter lettering was supplied pre-cut and pre-positioned on application tape so that the vehicle livery fitting teams could apply it straight to the roller shutters, without the need for any hand cutting or trimming on site. This sped up fitting times by at least 50% and eliminated any possible problems that can arise from hand cutting.

Livery Design

With every millimetre of the vehicles accounted for, the templates were used to form the construction of the livery design. Reflective battenburg markings, NHS logos and cut vinyl lettering were represented on the design proofs (diagram 1 shown below), along with all internal decals for each vehicle, which were then sent to the customer for sign off.

Our Approach to the Contract

Being ISO9001 certified, Fleet ID have detailed quality control processes in place, which are carried out for each livery batch for a single end user. Using a flexible approach to manufacture and delivery schedules allowed us to meet the customer’s requirements on a number of levels throughout the contract.

We implemented a way of working which allowed the customer to request the vehicle livery kits in manageable batches, being delivered to them to suit their application schedule. Vehicle livery kits were also packaged to suit the fitting requirements at WAS, helping them to roll this out in a methodical and practical way.

ESV Approved Conversion Warranty

The WAS built NHS vehicles were also covered by our ESV approved conversion warranty, in line with accredited certifications provided by us in conjunction with material manufacturers. All materials used for this type of application are warranted for between 5 and 10 years, depending on the material. In addition to this, fitting is also covered by a 5 year warranty, when application has been carried out by a Fleet ID engineer.

The Completed Project

Over 19 months, Kylie managed the project, ensuring all vehicle kits were produced and delivered to WAS Germany and WAS UK. Our livery production schedule ran slightly ahead of the build schedule, which allowed for smooth running of the build and livery application process throughout the contract.
