Which chevron kit type is the best fit for you?

Planked, flooded separate, flooded applied or magnetic?

What does ‘Chevron Kit Type’ mean?

Here at Fleet ID, our chevron kits are tailored for your fleet or vehicle requirements. When ordering a chevron kit, you’ll choose which materials it will be made from and the amount of coverage you need (when ordering for a van). One other box to tick is to select the ‘chevron kit type’.

But what does this mean? And how does this affect your Chapter 8 kit?

‘Chevron kit type’ refers to the way in which the chevron markings are manufactured and selecting the right kit type is an important part of the process. Each option affects how the chevron kit will be applied to the vehicle and comes with its own set of benefits.

Read on to explore the different kit types and decide which one is the best fit for you.

#1 The Planked Chevron Kit

Planked chevron kits are manufactured with each of the red reflective and the yellow fluorescent pieces as separate strips.

Planked chevron kits are applied to the vehicle one piece at a time, with the red and yellow reflective butted up to each other. Although application of planked kits can sometimes take longer than other kit types, some people prefer them for a couple of reasons.

  1. A ‘smoother’ finish. As the red and yellow strips are both applied directly to the surface of the vehicle, and with little difference between the thickness of the materials, they can feel like a ‘smoother’ finish once applied.
  2. Easy repairs. Should repairs be required, planked kits can sometimes make this easier. As the kit is made of individual planks, damage to a small section is easier to repair without replacing the entire panel. This is useful for long-term maintenance.

Planked chevron kits manufactured by Fleet ID are delivered with each panel hinged together with masking tape, in manageable sections. This makes fitting quicker and easier, compared to kits where the pieces are supplied completely separately.

#2 The Flooded Separate Chevron Kit

These kits are supplied as large sections of fluorescent yellow, with the reflective red strips separate to be applied on top.

Flooded separate Chapter 8 kits can speed up the application process compared to a planked chevron kit, as the ‘panels’ of fluorescent yellow cover larger areas of the vehicle in one go. The red is then applied seamlessly at regular intervals on top of the complete piece of fluorescent yellow, making flooded separate kits the preferred option for those looking for speedier fitting times.

#3 The Flooded Applied Chevron Kit

Flooded Applied Chapter 8 kits are possibly the quickest kit to apply. The red reflective chevrons are pre-applied to the fluorescent yellow panels by the Fleet ID team prior to despatch. This means that large sections – complete with fluorescent and red reflective material – can be applied in one go. Although there is an initial cost difference compared to planked and flooded separate chevron kits, this cost can be recouped with the time saved during application.

As with flooded separate kits, once the kit is applied to the vehicle, and should any accident damage occur, it is possible that more of the kit would need to be replaced, leading to possibly higher maintenance costs.

#4 The Magnetic Chevron Kit

If you’re looking for a chevron kit solution for a multi-purpose vehicle, a magnetic chevron kit may be the perfect option for you. For fleets which include pool vehicles or grey fleet vehicles, removable safety markings are a smart, flexible solution.

Magnetic chevron kits from Fleet ID have the fluorescent yellow ‘flooded’ onto magnetic sheeting, cut to shape and then the red reflective chevrons are applied over the top. This produces a flexible, yet durable solution to temporary Chapter 8 marking requirements.

Prior to ordering a magnetic chevron kit, the intended vehicle should be checked for it’s magnetic properties, to make sure that this is the right option. Some vehicle models are not suitable for magnetic kits.

So, which kit type is your best fit?

When deciding which chevron kit application type is right for your fleet, make sure you consider the following:

  • Fitting – do you need speed, ease, or do you just prefer a particular type of application?
  • Maintenance – you may want to minimise replacement panel costs as much as possible, so an option which requires less material in the event of accident damage.
  • Use – do you need a kit that can be removed and re-applied as and when needed? If so, a magnetic kit is the best option from the above examples.

The ‘best’ Chapter 8 kit type can only be defined by the kit type that best suits your needs. Once you know these, you can choose the right chevron kits for your fleet!
